TOOLS OF THE SCREENWRITER

Writing for the screen requires a unique set of skills different from the ones needed by the novelist or poet. Dialogue, character, scene, structure, and pacing can seem daunting to all but the most experienced of writers. However, with the right encouragement and application, we can harness the screenwriter's tools and master the challenges of writing for the screen.

In this one-time introductory seminar, we'll take a look at scenes and examples from Paddy Chayefesky to Ava Duvernay and talk about what makes a successful script work. This is largely a lecture class, but there will be participation and some in-class prompts with pen and paper. No prior screenwriting knowledge or software is necessary. This is an inspiring introduction to the world of screenwriting open for movie lovers, writers of all levels, and anyone with an interest in the art of telling stories.
